Dahlia classification groups

There are many varieties of dahlias, of different colors, sizes and shapes

Group 1 - Single-flowered Dahlias

Dahlia with single outer ring of florets, the centre forming a disc. Usually dahlias from this group have brown stems and leaves.


Group 2 - Anemone-flowered Dahlias

Dahlias with one or more outer rings of generally flattened ray florets surrounding a dense group of tubular florets. 


Group 3 - Collerette Dahlias

Collerette dahlias is with a single outer ring of flowers generally flat, which must overlap but with a small flower ring forming a disc in the center.


Group 4 - Waterlily Dahlias

This category of dahlias have fully double blooms characterised by broad ray florets that are slightly involute along their length. 


Group 5 - Formal Decorative Dahlias

Decorative dahlias have fully double blooms showing no disc.


Group 6 - Ball Dahlias

Ball dahlias have fully double blooms. The ray florets rounded at the tips, with margins spirally arranged and involute.


Group 7 - Pompon Dahlias

Pompon dahlias is very similar with group 6 but flowers have fully double spherical blooms of miniature size.


Group 8 - Cactus Dahlias

It needs no description 😊. Looks like a cactus 😊. The petals are very thin.

Cactus dahlias have fully double blooms.


Group 9 - Semi-Cactus Dahlias

Fully double blooms, it looks almost like the dahlia from group 8 only the petals are bigger.


Group 10 - Miscellaneous Dahlias

They did not know in which group this dahlia is, so the explanation is simple: Dahlias in this group are dahlias that do not are into groups 1-9 and 11-14 inclusive 😊


Group 11- Fimbriated Dahlias

Fimbriated dahlias have blooms where the tips of the ray florets should be evenly split or notched into two or more divisions and create a beautiful fringed overall effect.


Group 12 - Star Dahlias

The flowers that are part of this group are unmistakable due to the unique star shape.

Group 13 - Double Orchid Dahlias

Fully double blooms showing no disc and with triangular centers.


Group 14 - Paeony Dahlias

These dahlias are somewhat similar to those in group 1 but in contrast they to have multiple outer rings of ray florets surrounding a disc.
