I only put the dwarf dahlias in the ground, I left the tall ones in pots so I can move them as I like.
If you grow dahlias in the ground in big beds for cutting, is better to left them there.
In mild winters dahlias can be left in the ground.
If you keep them in pots to fill the gaps in the garden or for floral arrangements (like me)
it is good to dig out and keep them inside over the winter.
To overwinter Dahlias is pretty easily.
In late Autumn, after the foliage is blackened , cut off all but 5 -10 cm of stems, and carefully dig tubers without damaging them.
Knock off as much soil as possible, ideally without washing them.
Allow tubers to dry for a few days in a well-ventilated space, out of direct sunlight.
I prefer to wrap each tuber loosely in a sheet of newspaper or put them in paper bags hanging in the shed.
Traditionally dahlia tubers need to be dusted with Yellow Sulfur to prevent fungal infection (I prefer not to use chemicals)
As dahlias are tender, the best starting to plant dormant tubers is in mid to late April.
