How to overwinter Lilies

Some day lily leaves may remain green into late fall.
In the UK you can leave lilies bulbs in the ground during winter.
I will have an experience this year.
I will dig up from the ground a few Lilies bulbs and I will keep them until spring when I plant them again, and I will let a few others to overwinter in the ground.
I am very curious how the ones left in the ground in the winter will grow next year.

There are 3 options:
1. Leave them in the ground over the winter.
2. Take them out, split it and plant them back immediately.
or
3. Dig them out and keep it in a cool, dry place until spring.

However, no matter if they are in the ground or in pots, no matter if you want to overwinter the lilies in the ground or inside, the cutting stems process remain  the same.

After the Lilies not longer bloom.
Cut off spent flowers and allow stem with leaves to die back.
Diminish watering as the plant begins to go dormant.
Cut trim off dead leaves as soon as they yellow and turn brown, removing them completely from the plant.

First option - overwinter in the ground.
If you want to keep the bulbs in the ground over the winter, when foliage has died back, just cut the steam short close to the ground (10 cm), leave the stem as is but remove all leaves. This forces the lily to provide added growth into the bulb.

Second option - separate and re-plant.
When? September or October
Dig up the bulbs (you can do that once all the foliage has died back)
At this time you can cut the stem to just above the lily bulb.
Clean them carefully.
Proceed to gently separate each bulb.
Re-plant them immediately.

Third option - overwinter inside.
Let the bulb grow where it is until Fall, as late as possible, even in November.
   Dig up the bulbs carefully.
If the soil is wet, I prefer do not clean it immediately. I wait 1-2 days until I clean them.
Clean the bulbs, let it to dry for a few days in a cool, dark location.
Hang them in a paper bag with dry peat moss or vermiculite in the dark and cool space.
   or
After cut back the steam you can transfer them to a container in a cool room.

Lilies can be planted at any time during the autumn, winter or early spring by end of March.
   Finally, opinions are divided.
In my opinion, in the UK if you leave the lilies in the ground over the winter is risk of rotting due to the winter rain.
